Extraction of Neutral Unknown- Post Lab 3

Aqueous Extraction
Observation
Round 15 drops of HCl were used to turn the NaOH extract 1 acidic.
Around 30 drops of HCl were used to turn the NaOH extract 2 acidic.
When the HCl was added to the NaOH extract 1 precipitates form on the top.

Data (Unknown 1)
The purified compound is Fluorenone
Melting point of unknown 1:  80 °C - 88 °C
Initial mass of unknown: .39 g
Extraction mass of unknown: .28 g
%extraction= .28/.39 x 100% = 72%

Question-
Identify the neutral compound. Fluorenone

Was your extraction effective at purifying it?
My extraction was effective at purifying the neutral compound. The first NaOH extraction formed precipitate when the HCl was added. This shows that NaOH was effective at removing the acid impurity. When I obtain the melting point for the neutral compound. The compound started to melt at around 80°C and fully melts at 88°C. With the data given in the Organic Chemistry 1 manual figure that the melting point rage that I got was closest to the melting point of Fluorenone. Even though my compound started melting 2 °C before the actual melting point of fluorenone (82 °C-85 °C). I still feel that my extraction of the unknown 1 neutral compound from the base impurity.
